GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 15

COMMUNITY GROUPS

Men's Chorus enters eighth year of singing the dream

by John W. Dellemanna

As members of the North Coast Men's Chorus, there are many important things that we would like to share with the Northeastern Ohio gay, lesbian, and bisexual community as we begin our eighth year as your gay chorus. After our most exciting season yet, we look forward to even greater musical accomplishments.

Timothy Rob-

son will be con-

Gay Pride Concert. We will feature the world premiere of another commissioned work, this one composed by Frank Ferko of Chicago.

The future plans for the North Coast Men's Chorus include: the performance of more commissioned pieces; participation in the

tinuing as our musical director. This coming year is Robson's third season with the chorus. With each successive concert, he encourages and indeed prepares the chorus for more and more challenging musical endeavors. In this way the Chorus has taken its well-deserved place among the other talented choruses in Ohio.

Before the commencement of our regular concert series, we are performing two autumn concerts. The United Church of Christ has asked us to perform at their national convention in celebration of their "open and affirming" status. (This refers to churches that embrace people of all sexual orientations.)

Partly due to a significant Akron membership and audience, we have decided to add an Akron performance to our coming season. We make our Akron debut at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Fairlawn on October 14. We encourage all of our Akron fans to tell a friend, and come on out to hear us right in your own back yard. Perhaps we can give the Akron community a taste of the chorus. This may encourage the Akron gay community to come and hear our varied repertoire throughout the year at our other performances. It is this writer's hope that our Akron performance becomes a yearly tradition uniting the queer communities of both cities.

The theme for our 1995-96 season is "We Sing the Dream." We begin the season with our traditional winter concert, "Holiday Flourishes," at the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church in early December. On April 13, 1996, we will present our spring concert, "That's Why I Love You: True Colors on Our Rainbow."

Our listeners will be delighted by the world premiere of a commissioned piece written expressly for the North Coast Men's Chorus. This work, written by Craig Carnahan of Minneapolis, was funded in part by a grant from the estate of Jeff Wobbecke, a friend and former member of the chorus. June 15, 1996 is the date of our

GALA (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) Festival in Tampa, Florida; and a North Coast Men's Chorus compact disc. So

keep your eyes glued to this column, and keep your ears glued to The Gay '90s on WHK 1420 AM from 9:00 to 11:00 Sunday evenings for all future Chorus events.

Both auditions are at Judson Manor, on E. 107 St. just north of Chester Ave. in Cleveland's University Circle. Previous musical or choral experience is helpful.
